Muutaman viime päivien aikana on julkaistu kaksikin mielenkiintoista haastattelua, joissa Linden Labin uusi toimitusjohtaja Rod Humble jakaa visiotaan Second Lifen tulevaisuudennäkymistä.

Wagner James Au on toimittanut haastattelun New World Notes -blogissaan, NWN Exclusive: Interview with Rod Humble, Linden Lab’s New CEO, on the Future of Second Life, jossa Humble kertoo, kuinka hän haluaa erityisesti kehittää Second Lifen helppokäyttöisyyttä, käytettävyyttä ja tehdä virtuaalimaailmasta helposti lähestyttävän – ja Humblen näkemykset perustuvat hänen kokemuksiinsa peliteollisuuden puolelta.

“Biggest value I can bring, having worked on the entertainment side [of tech]… ease of use and accessibility are obviously extremely important. […] ‘How can we make interacting with a game enjoyable?’ We spent a lot of effort just making sure people can be pulled through the game. I think Second Life is almost the reverse… people who are quite comfortable with computers get totally frustrated [trying to use it.] […] ‘How can we make sure the front door is open and people can come in and enjoy it?’”

“Our current customers need to be sure they have the customer service they deserve… [also], lag is a problem. […] We’re looking at various ways to make SL easier to get into, and that’s good for everybody.”

Myös Dusan Writer on julkaissut Rod Humblen haastattelun blogissaan Dusan Writer’s Metaverse – Virtual Dialogues: My Conversation with Rod Humble, CEO of Linden Lab.

“Early on I was exposed to the idea that if you can tap into the power of people’s creativity you’ll have something incredibly powerful. […] Second Life is onto something really powerful – the ability to create is the magic and I want to help build on that.”

“There’s a magic to the Second Life experience, but what kills me are the little things – those little edges that kind of stop the whole magic feeling. So it’s things like lag, or when things render just a bit too slowly. Those might not be sexy things but it’s really important I think to fix them so they don’t detract from the magic.”

“Look, with things like HTML-5 and more immersive types of things on the Web in general, I can’t help thinking that maybe Second Life has a broader role to play in sort of shaping how we think about interacting and communicating.”

“I’m way less interested in how we program viewers, although we can get into that stuff, […] I’m really interested in new ways we can interact with the world that we haven’t done before. Maybe they’re really simple things or radically simple.”

Kaiken kaikkiaan edellisten kommenttien valossa Second Lifen tulevaisuus näyttää vähintäänkin erittäin mielenkiintoiselta. Uuden toimitusjohtajan visioissa on selkeästi nähtävissä päättäväisyyttä – erityisesti käyttäjäkokemusta haittaavien ongelmien ratkaiseminen on tärkeää.
